IKEA has something colorful in store for us, and it involves a collaboration with Teenage Engineering. Without a doubt, the FREKVENS speakers are some of the quirkiest Bluetooth speakers we’ve seen in a while, and they come with a host of other stylish products. The partnership was first announced in June 2017, but it’s only now that we’re seeing the devices actually go on sale at IKEA stores. While Teenage Engineering supplies the audio technology, IKEA handles the home integration and distribution, which begins on February 1.

A Couple of Speakers and Loads of Fun

The two primary speakers in the lineup are a $69.99 unit that can be matched with a subwoofer (totalling at $149) and a smaller model that can be clipped onto a belt for only $19.99. There are other accessories that you may add such as a $10 speaker base that lights up. IKEA’s goal here is to throw a “great party” at home. The retail giant goes on to say that Teenage Engineering was the right choice for producing this collab in terms of creative output. IKEA learned that 65 percent of all millennials aged from 18 to 29 years old like to get that “homely feeling” when listening to music. The Swedish retailer took this as an opportunity to expand its audio electronics segment with a portfolio that speaks to the younger generation building a home.

But That’s Not All

Although IKEA and Teenage Engineering didn’t disclose the official specifications of these devices, they do offer additional home accessories such as an electronic choir, vinyl player, and even party lighting. By delivering on different fronts, IKEA follows through on their mantra of being able to mix and match multiple pieces of furniture and decorations found in their numerous stores around the world. Having modular speakers in its arsenal speaks highly of the company’s drive to reach a larger, younger audience.
